Any woman with an unplanned pregnancy should have an obstetric ultrasound, regardless of her intended pregnancy decision.
Ultrasounds provide you with valuable information about your pregnancy’s health. You’ll be able to safeguard your well-being and better understand your options.
Choices Family Resource Center is here to supply the pregnancy information you need to move forward.
Why an Ultrasound?
Ultrasounds are key diagnostic tools that give providers insight into the human body. Typically, an ultrasound is carried out by a sonographer or nurse applying gel over the body part to be examined. They then use a special device called a transducer over the body, which produces an image from sound waves.
Obstetric ultrasounds can be abdominal or transvaginal. An abdominal ultrasound is noninvasive, while a transvaginal ultrasound is invasive (the transducer is gently inserted into the vagina).
There are no known risks associated with ultrasound.
The Importance of an Obstetric ultrasound
Even if you’re considering abortion, you’ll need an ultrasound. They provide key pregnancy information and confirm specific details, including:
- Viability: As many as 26% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage. An ultrasound will determine whether your pregnancy is viable (growing normally and has a heartbeat). If you have had a miscarriage, you may need medical treatment. Abortion is not an option for miscarriage, nor is it a treatment method.
- Gestational age: Knowing your gestational age, or how far along you are, is crucial. This detail may impact your pregnancy options, and it will determine your pregnancy stage.
- Location: A healthy, viable pregnancy is located in the uterus. Sometimes, women experience ectopic pregnancies. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants in a location other than the uterus, such as a fallopian tube. This nonviable pregnancy is very dangerous and always requires medical treatment, which does not include abortion.
No-Cost, Confidential Ultrasounds
Choices Family Resource Center provides no-cost, confidential ultrasounds to women with morning appointments at our Sebring location. This service is performed by an RDMS and does not determine gender or diagnose abnormalities, but we can confirm you have a viable, uterine pregnancy.
Once you’ve confirmed your pregnancy details, we can provide pregnancy options information at your appointment.
