Figuring out when to take a pregnancy test can be confusing. It can be helpful to learn how pregnancy tests work so you can understand why timing matters.
Taking a pregnancy test too early or using it incorrectly can lead to false negatives.
At Choices Family Resource Centers, we offer no-cost pregnancy tests and confidential ultrasounds (if you qualify) to provide you with the pregnancy information you need.

How Do Pregnancy Tests Work?
All pregnancy tests work by detecting a hormone called hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in your blood or urine, depending on the type of test.
The hormone hCG increases rapidly in the body after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. When this hormone level is detected, it yields a positive pregnancy test reading; when it is undetected, it yields a negative reading.
HCG levels increase over time at different rates. This is why the timing of your test matters. For some women, one day after their missed period might show negative pregnancy test results because hCG levels haven’t risen high enough yet. This is why repeat testing after a negative pregnancy test is often recommended.
When Do You Take a Pregnancy Test?
It is recommended to take a pregnancy test 1-2 days after a missed period, as testing too early could result in a false negative. First-morning urine is especially recommended for at-home pregnancy tests, as hormone levels are more concentrated.
If the pregnancy test is negative and your period hasn’t arrived yet, then repeat testing should be done a week later.
How Accurate Are Pregnancy Tests?
Pregnancy tests are generally very accurate when used correctly and at the right time. Some factors that can cause inaccurate results are not following the instructions, testing too early, or using diluted urine.
False negatives are more common than false positives; getting the timing right is important.
What To Do After a Positive Pregnancy Test?
It’s normal to feel lots of different emotions if you have a positive pregnancy result. The next step is to get an ultrasound to see how your pregnancy is developing and how far along you are.
After this, we recommend sitting down to learn about your options, which are parenting, adoption, or abortion.
If you are still testing negative after retesting, you may be having other issues, such as irregular periods, which should be discussed with your healthcare provider.
