If you just found out your girlfriend is pregnant unexpectedly, you might wonder whether insurance will pay for the abortion pill. Having clear, accurate information at this time is essential. Florida insurance policies are subject to strict rules, and understanding your plan and state law is key.
While Choices Family Resource Center does not provide or refer for abortions, we do offer no-cost services and reliable information to support your girlfriend in making an informed decision.
What You Need to Know About Insurance Coverage
In Florida, most private insurance plans—including those bought through the Affordable Care Act marketplace—are not allowed to cover abortion, except in rare cases where the woman’s life is at risk. Only private plans purchased outside the ACA marketplace might offer abortion coverage.
Medicaid coverage for abortion in Florida is even more restricted. Under federal and state law, Medicaid pays for abortion only if the pregnancy is due to rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother. In the vast majority of situations, neither private insurance nor Medicaid will cover the abortion pill.
Because of this, most people in Florida pay out of pocket. The cost for medication abortion typically ranges from about $500 to $800.
Why an Ultrasound Matters
Has your girlfriend confirmed her pregnancy yet? While pregnancy tests can show a positive result, only an ultrasound can confirm whether or not the pregnancy is located in the uterus, whether it’s viable, and how far along it is.
Florida law prohibits abortion after about six weeks of gestational age—an estimated six weeks since a missed period—except in very limited circumstances. These include proven rape, incest, or human trafficking (allowing up to 15 weeks), severe fetal abnormality, or life danger.
An ultrasound confirms the status of the pregnancy and provides your girlfriend with accurate information about her eligibility and options.
