How the Abortion Pill Works
The abortion pill (also called medical abortion) uses drugs to end a pregnancy. Mifepristone blocks progesterone, a hormone needed to help the pregnancy grow. Misoprostol causes the uterus to contract, which expels the pregnancy and related tissues from the vagina.
When you take these drugs, you’ll experience abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding as the pregnancy is expelled from your body.
How to Know if You’re Eligible
First, you should always discuss your health history and eligibility for any medical procedure with a healthcare provider. They can help you determine whether taking abortion drugs poses a health risk.
According to the Mayo Clinic, you shouldn’t take abortion drugs if you:
- Are too far along in your pregnancy (the FDA has approved the abortion pill through 10 weeks gestation)
- Have an intrauterine device (IUD) currently in place
- Have a suspected ectopic pregnancy (a life-threatening condition that occurs when a fertilized egg implants in a location other than the uterus)
- Have specific medical conditions, including bleeding disorders, certain heart or blood vessel diseases, severe liver, kidney, or lung disease, or an uncontrolled seizure disorder
- Take a blood thinner or certain steroid medications
- Have allergies to the abortion drugs used
- Can’t make follow-up visits to your provider or access emergency care
